YOUR NAME

As soon as I arrived in Hong Kong, I hurried up to watch ‘Kimi no Na wa’ which I had heard about a lot in Japan; it was a good opportunity to discover the work of Makoto Shinkai, a talented anime director very different from those of the Ghibli studios, especially from Hayao Miyazaki.

For those who have not watched the movie, ‘Your name’ tells the love story of two teenagers, Taki and Mitsuha, who constantly switch bodies, lives and places, though they are out of sync in a gap of three years. This sort of hole in time complicates their meeting together when they fall in love, particularly because she is supposed to have died in a catastrophe when a comet, split in two, destroyed her town home. Taki succeeds to reverse the situation, Mitshuha and the other inhabitants are saved; sadly, each one loses the memory of the other’s name; but the feelings remain and eventually they meet again.

‘Kimi no Na wa’ is a beautiful sentimental tale that explores the intricacies of the different levels of reality and reveals that everything is welded together. The first level of reality is the body; the switch would be possible, in the narrative of the movie, because there is an affinity between this boy and this girl; at the level of the archetype, it would be possible to say that Taki represents the male soul of Mitsuha, as well as she represents his female soul. Taki’s female side awakes in him. Mitsuha’ male side awakes in her. There is a degree of sexual curiosity for each other in their own bodies.

There is also the affinity, or link, of places. Since the beginning Mitsuha yearns to be in Tokyo and be a handsome young chap living there; her wish in not necessarily a denial of her home town and culture, but the calling of her male soul living somewhere else. For this same reason so many people can never meet their soul mate. On the other hand, Taki is a modern urban boy, totally disconnected from his earthy and ancestral roots; Mitsuha belongs to a deeply rooted traditionally family, familiar with rituals and their gods; the kuchikamizaki ritual that the girl performs, announces a marriage between she and Taki. In a very deep sense, and, of course, very far from the director conscious intention, this ritual is associated to the marriage of the hero with the mother Earth (similar rituals were performed in Celtic or Aztec ancient cultures). When Taki goes back to the ancient Shinto shrine, he knows that he has to drink the sacred potion, thence they can be united though they still have to face the main adversary: time.

The other important affinity is with Time, hence the constant game with synchronicity or lack of synchronicity. In its negative side, Time, Saturn in astrology and alchemy, is a force that brings about separation and death; from love’s perspective, death and separation are the same. The data in Taki’s mobile phone disappears because Mitsuha is supposed to have perished in the catastrophe three years before; but real love cannot lose hope and this is the reason why Taki reverses time, saves her and they find each other in the present.

Makoto Shinkai (Feb 9, 1973 in Koumi, Nagano, Japan) had an incredibly beautiful intuition introducing the symbolism of weaving in his film; he associates time and reality to the art and the tradition of weaving. Mitsuha’s grandmother represents the guardian of the tradition, and she knows the power and the secrets of weaving, of how reality is woven, its different patterns and the nature of dreams. The director shows astounding images of this art in a metaphorical way.

I only regret that the character of this obachan is not fully developed; she is the key of the deep meaning of this movie and needed to be more important in the narrative; maybe this lack of emphasis on her makes the metaphor of the weaving not so clear for the viewers; none of the film critics of ‘Kimi no Na wa’ I read for this article mentions it. Anyway, the intuition of the knitting of reality is very deep; according to the data and records about Shinkai san his training seems to be only about design, computers and modern cinema, he does not seem to be connected with any esoteric tradition, but surely his artistic sensitivity awoke this knowledge in him.

The point of view of this film is by all means sentimental; the symbol that orchestrates all the themes and images of the story is the Moon. There is no water (active emotion) in the director’s chart; thus emotion is the inferior (most unconscious) psychological function that expresses itself in a spontaneous way in his artistic work. With his three planets in Aquarius (Sun, Mercury and Venus) we can attest that he is a highly intelligent man, but his Saturn in Gemini (another airy sing) causes trouble for communication, so he found images and symbols as the easiest and safest way to communicate. Saturn in Gemini tends to provoke dissociation (the split of the comet?); the themes of feelings and emotions are constantly overcoming this tendency in the movie. Emotion binds.

One of the comments I read quotes a scholar in East Asian studies (Thomas Lammarre) who says that Miyazaki goes from point A to point B, whereas Makoto Shinkai goes directly from point A to C and skips B. Sure, Miyazaki san is a Capricorn and the structure of his tales is perfect; but Shinkai san is an Aquarius, his Mercury can travel comfortably in the spherical net of reality.

‘Your Name’, however, offers only a Lunar perspective of reality; the characters, their actions, thoughts and desires are ruled by emotions, Moon and Saturn are the masters in Shinkai san’s world; his poetry is romantic, his characters do not become individuals, they only want to find their counterpart and be happy, they cannot be complete without the other. Most probably his Moon is in Taurus (we do not have the birth time), which makes him very passionate and confers on him the strong visual and sensual capacity for constructing his images; although the themes play with different realities, he shows an obsession with detail and realistic scenery, an almost photographic capacity to portrait urban space.

Here lies the main difference with Hayao Miyazaki whose characters are always struggling to become real individuals; each of his films illustrates a process of individuation. Miyazaki san’s art is Solar. Makoto Shinkai san is still young; his potential is enormous. (the end)
