JEROME KERVIEL, A MODERN HERO

From the beginning the scandal of the Société Générale, when this important French bank accused one of its traders, Jerome Kerviel, of illegally losing around 5 billion euro, I have been following the case. What intrigued me the most was the fact that this French trader had not stolen any money; he had only made a wrong financial move. The Société Générale declared that the movement had been illegal, but Kerviel claimed that his superiors knew about it, that they had never complained when he made the bank earn millions.

It all started on January/24, 2008, the year of the financial crisis. It became obvious for me, and for many others who support him in France, that, Jerome Kerviel was an escape goat that the SG (Société Générale) was using to distract public attention and cover itself from criticism. In principle, Kerviel was an honest man only trying to produce good results for his company and get a big bonus. A lonely man was now fighting against a gigantic financial corporation.

As the other financial scandals burst, such as the Madoff’s who destroyed the lives of hundreds of people, it became clear that Kerviel stood apart from those criminals and cheaters. Kerviel was born on Jan/11, 1977, at 16:20hrs in Pont l’Abbe, France  (http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Kerviel).   As a Capricorn, I naturally identify myself with his drama; not from the point of view of financial games for which I am a total ignorant, but I understand what only a Capricorn can understand: how far the sense of responsibility can go, and how this same obsession with responsibility can turn against ourselves and destroy us.

For six years (soon a square of Saturn) Kerviel has been trying to survive the combat against the dragon. He has been through all sorts of legal procedures, has changed lawyers three times, and has even published a book about his ordeal. Kerviel has had to survive without income and savings; he moved home several times, he even had to live in a garage for some months. And, of course, his private life has been shattered; he lost many of his friends, he broke off with his girlfriend, his family has been affected, his mother, who has been helping him financially, is now seriously ill.

With a Cancer Ascendant, Kerviel must feel very vulnerable exposed to the cannibalism of the media, the attacks and the alliances of powerful personalities against him, plus the impact it all had on her mother.

Eventually, the French tribunals (Cour de cassation) reached a verdict. The rogue trader, as the media nicknamed him, has been condemned to 5 years of prison. People were astounded when Kerviel suddenly when to Rome to meet the Pope and came back to France on foot before been detained by the French police and put to prison. I laughed when I read this because I understood the Capricorn motives behind Kerviel’s pilgrimage. It was not a show.

Each one of the twelve signs has a heroic potential. Capricorn has to climb the sacred mountain and offer himself to the gods. Hercules did this after his twelve works. In the Christian tradition, Jesus had to carry his cross up the mountain and be crucified. Kerviel is an intelligent and clever man, good for trading and finances but certainly not a sophisticated intellectual.  He comes from a middle class background and a traditional catholic family; so he recurred to his Christian roots. Saturn (responsibility) the ruler of Capricorn is in Leo, the sign of identity; so, through hardships, Kerviel finally understood what his real identity meant. He had to assume that his mission in life was to find his real self and offer it to a superior power. It had to be a little bit dramatic (Leo), and there was lots of walking involved (Saturn is in the III House).

Moreover, there was a practical reason in Kerviel’s journey from Rome to France, a Capricorn can understand it. Knowing that he would have to spend years in prison, in an uncomfortable cell, with little opportunity to walk, he wanted to walk for days and days under the sky, through valleys and mountains. He must be cherishing those memories now.

Kerviel’s mother was hairdresser (his Moon is Libra, sign of harmony and beauty), his father a blacksmith. Nothing was extraordinary in his family provincial milieu. He was naturally ambitious, studied hard, found a good job and made the best of it. He was a hard working man; he colleagues say that he rarely took holydays. His salary was only 2 300 euro a month, 60 000 a year with his bonuses. Nothing was outstanding. But then, the collective unconscious chose him to become a hero. When this happens, the most ordinary background becomes mythical.

Thus, there is a very Venus quality in Kerviel’s chart; Venus is exalted in Pisces and it is on the MC; it also rules his Moon in Libra. He must be a charming man. Besides, Libra is very good for financial operations. Neptune in the VI House (work) associates Pisces and Venus. So the ruler of the XII (House of prisons) caused imprisonment. But the promise is a spiritual journey.

Mercury and Mars in Capricorn in the House of Libra (VII) plus the Sun on the cusp of the VIII (House of Pluto), represent the father blacksmith energy of working with iron (a metal ruled by Mars) to transform it. As a hero, we can say that Kerviel is a son of Venus (beauty) and Hephaestus (the blacksmith of the gods). Thence, Kerviel has to go through hell (Pluto’s house) to create something beautiful in his life. Personally, I think that he is a real hero, but not a saint.  Heroes can be proud and make terrible mistakes. Kerviel’s was to be over confident with his skills; he did not realise that he was working for selfish and powerful people who would eventually use him and crush him.(the end)
