SATURN IN SCORPIO: WHEN POWER HAS CANCER(1)

Ever since Pluto entered in Capricorn in 2008, I perceived that in order to grasp this incredibly complex transit, which will end up in 2025, we needed to keep tracking the transits of Saturn. The notion is simple: Capricorn, the sign with the biggest capacity of endurance, is ruled by Saturn. Thence, the inexorable action of corrosion and destruction that Pluto imposes to transform and disclose the potential of a sign (planet or house) would depend on Saturn’s rhythm led by the sign in which it will be transiting.

According to this logic, the most critical moment would happen when Saturn would be in Scorpio, as it is now. The world has changed since 2008; we have witnessed the downfall of several Arab states ruled for decades by tyrants and repressive governments; financial demises; Tohuko’s earthquake and tsunami, the death of Kim Yong-Il, to mention only some of the changes. We know that Capricorn and Saturn, its ruler, are associated to authority, states, power, structures, stiffness, therefore to downfalls, collapse, end of tyranny; Pluto is associated to nuclear energy, fear, death and transformation.

Pluto works from the nucleus to the surface; I have always insisted that when we see a concrete transformation or a radical change associated to Pluto, it means that this planet had already been acting under the surface for a long time. Pluto is the planet of genesis, it represents the activity of the genes; its power is the mysterious and unstoppable intelligence of the genes; Pluto is the source of evolution, Saturn is the manager of that evolution. In general, when cancer manifests itself, the disease had been latent, or getting ready, for quite a while. If we think of tyrants such as Gadaffi or Hosni Mubarak, we can be certain that an explosive social potential was ready to explode and overturn them together with their structures of power.

Capricorn and Scorpio, Pluto and Saturn, tend to mask their own purposes (mostly in unconscious and instinctual ways) in order to complete the task or end a process of transformation. These planets and signs provoke a sensation of imminent death when they feel exposed; indeed, people can die or somehow destroy themselves if they feel they are losing their power.

When Pluto first entered Capricorn, Saturn was in Virgo (sign of order and systems); the financial crisis provoked a sensation of disorder, insecurity for our stability in the future, lost of confidence in financial institutions. It was no coincidence that both planets were in earthy signs; their message meant that starting from the most basic level of material security, nothing was safe. At the collective level, our sense of concrete reality started to fade away. Then Saturn transited into Libra, the sign of its exaltation, and a meaningful message was conveyed; from the anxiety of economical instability, our sense of logic and cohesion of relatedness was shaken.

We tend to see Libra only in terms of associations, marriage and personal relations; but the most important function of this sign in our natal chart is to help us maintain a sense of equilibrium in a coherent world, even when we go though changes and crisis. Cosmos means world but the term includes notions of arrangement (cosmetics), building up, connection and integration. Japan was directly affected by the tsunami, but the whole world experienced the horror of living in an unreliable world; not only was nature unpredictable, but the confidence on the system science and technology became more frightening than ever. We felt as if the air we inhaled (Libra is an airy sign) could be destroying our inner order (the nuclear energy is ruled by Pluto).

Saturn has just come into Scorpio last October, events and symbols have acquired a most radical expression; we cannot ignore the message. Scorpio, ruled by Pluto and Mars, is certainly associated with war; the conflict in Syria became more radical, fears and threads of chemical weapons were on the news; sadist rapes in India (Pluto is associated to rape; rapes happen all the time but these have revealed a culture of horror and torture towards women). Most recently, the pope, Benedict XVI renounced, a most extraordinary event after 600 years; behind this resignation are hidden themes of corruption of one of the most powerful institutions in the world, financial frauds, sexual scandals, pederasty; Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez, dies after a battle against cancer; he was 58 years old and he was having his second Saturn return in Scorpio.

I want to concentrate on these last two events because the symbols are incredible accurate to help us understand how the reciprocity of Saturn transiting the sign of Pluto, and Pluto the sign of Saturn, works.(to be continued)
