ASTROLOGY, SUPERSTITION AND SYNCHRONICITY(1)

This New Year started with a curious display of information in the media: the constellations around the Earth have shifted, therefore, the astrological system has been dislocated, the signs do not coincide anymore; what is worse, a new sign has been added. According to this announcement, our sign is different from the one we thought we were.

The fact is that ever since I started studying astrology, seriously, almost 27 years ago, l have heard the same babble several times, periodically; then the rumour fades away and things come to normal, everybody interested in astrology  keeps contented with his or her own sign.

However, I cannot help getting a little bit upset with these campaigns of deprecation of astrology; what bothers me is not the attacks on a system of knowledge and symbols which wisdom and beauty l learned to admire. I respect people’s freedom to believe or not in astrology, l myself used to think it was pure superstition; of course, this, before l discovered and studied its real principles. Astrology is a traditional science that defends itself; for more than 2000 years, it has survived emperors, tyrants, the Christian church persecutions, modern rationality and incredulity. No, what bothers me is the ignorance and lack of ethics of journalists and pseudo scientists behind these cheap crusades.

Deriding astrology on terms of the so called scientific data can only mean two things: either those who attack it have not studied seriously the question, an irresponsible attitude, or, they have examined it but then they are deliberately trying to lie to people, which is unethical. The excuse and point of departure for disclosing the supposed failure of astrology is the precession of the equinoxes, a special movement of our planet that provokes the changes of Era in an opposite direction of the normal sequence of the Zodiac. This is, for example, the reason we are changing from Pisces to the Age of Aquarius.

It happens that the Earth have several astronomical movements, not only rotation and translation; a very important one, especially for understanding the astrological system, is Precession, a movement responsible for a constant displacement of the Vernal Point of the Zodiac, the 0 degree of Aries. It takes almost 26 000 years to make the Vernal Equinox Point coincide again with the 0 Aries. So let us try to explain in simple terms how it works, and, most important, what it means.

Astrologers have always known about this movement and its meaning; the first historical evidence we have comes from the astronomer Aristarchus of Samos who assessed the fact of the Precession of the equinoxes, he also recognized the heliocentric system in which the Earth turned around the Sun. Aristarchus had contact with sages from the Pythagoras tradition. But there are many archaeological monuments attesting the precession. If many rejected the heliocentric system, ancient astronomers and astrologers knew about the Great Year, the year when the Vernal Equinox Point coincided with the zero degree of Aries.

The first thing any student of astrology needs to bear in mind is that, except for the movement of the Moon, everything in astrology is an apparent movement; it seems that the stars, the Sun and all the planets are turning around the Earth, which is not true. This is due to the fact that we take the Earth as a fixed point; astrologers built the system from the perspective of the spectator. This is called the Tropical Zodiac (because of the apparent turns of the Sun, tropo means ‘to turn), our system is geocentric, not heliocentric. But those false movements are signals from heaven to men.

The spiritual masters of Ancient Times knew that all those motions of the cosmos around us conveyed a message for mankind. Thus, it seems, for example, that Jupiter turns around the Earth making a cycle of twelve years, this is not physically true, but it means something, it is a message we have to understand.

Put in a more conventional terms, since the dawn of humanity, men learned to associate their own cycles with the cycles of the Sun, the Moon, the planets and all the stars. For example, the cycles of the Moon coincided with cycles of fertility in women, plants and animals, as well as the motions of water, rain, rivers, lakes and seas. We are certainly putting this in terms of a modern mind, but for primitive or ancient men, reality was just like that, everything was connected with everything. We can call this a deep intuition (Jungian perspective), but for them, it was revelation, the gods had created the world in such a way that the pulse of life depended on the rhythms of the sky; men had to learn how to interpret this cosmos (this arrangement).

Priests, sages and artists knew that the coherence of the cosmos depended on basic laws, one of them was ‘As Above, So Below’; what is in up in the sky corresponds to what is on Earth. The rhythm of the Sun’s blaze corresponds to the beats of the heart, and the flow of solar light corresponds to flux of blood. Nevertheless, the common people tended to see the connection of the planets through means of influences, especially as societies became more complex, more power or utilitarian oriented.

One of the main sources of error of judgement and prejudices against astrology in Modern Times is precisely this notion of the ‘influence’ of the planets on human destiny. As we all know, basic science explains phenomena as series of cause and events; because there is no way to prove that planets make us do or not do things, Victorian scientists, among others, concluded that astrology was only a bunch of nonsense and superstition. And they are right, planets do not influence us, they only show us how our body and psyche are moving. This is the reason I always insist with my students, on the fact that we are not dealing with a system of cause and effect; we are dealing with synchronicity, energy or activity working simultaneously, we vibrate at the same rhythm of the apparent movements of the sky.(to be continued)
