しかし、soul(魂)、psyche(精神)、unconscious(無意識)の意味を理解するには、少し注意が必要で、私はメキシコの聴衆にkokoro(心)という言葉の意味を説明するのに苦労しました。

MIKIO NARUSE: AN ARTIST WHO UNDERSTOOD WOMEN

This last week of July, the Mexican Cinemateque (Cineteca Nacional) organized a retrospective of the cinema of Mikio Naruse; the event was made possible with the support of the Fundación Japón en México (the Japanese Cultural Institute in Mexico) which brought a specialist from a prestigious university in Japan, and I was appointed, as a film critic, to participate in a talk with him, an honour for me.

The selection included twelve of the most important films of Naruse from his last period, his masterpieces from the decade of the 50’s up to his death in 1967; for this reason, I had to spend a couple of weeks watching and studying all of them; it was hard to concentrate on this because of my busy schedule, but the experience was incredibly rewarding. Thus, I want to share my enthusiasm and my discoveries about this great artist, who, I am afraid, is not so well known nowadays in Japan beyond the circle of scholars and cinema fans. I cannot but choose this theme; it has been so deep in mind.

The relevance of the work of Mikio Naruse (Aug 20, 1905, Tokyo) in the Western World (Europe and USA) was a late discovery, much later than Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi; but starting from the 80’s, more and more Western scholars are seriously studying the surviving Naruse films, we could even talk of a sort of fever about him and about his unique vision of life, especially among women, no wonder so many feminist scholars are writing about him.

What makes this bunch of movies made more than 60 years ago (70 if we think that his silent films made in the 30’s are also enormously appreciated), most of them in black white, so appealing for the XXI century audience?

The main themes of Naurse, home dramas, stories of women, josei eiga or shoshimin eiga, were very common in the post war years; besides the long tradition in Japan of these genres, there was a sort of invasion from Hollywood movies with the same themes during the occupation. But what distinguishes Naruse’s films from others is his unique approach to treat those themes; his genius to understand the feminine subjectivity is astounding. Knowing that words like soul, psyche, unconscious, can be tricky to translate in Japanese, I tried to explain the word kokoro to the Mexican audience.

In Naruse’s movies women represent the energy of support and awareness; they learn by themselves and then try to teach men to see life through the heart. In most of his dramas, Naruse offers a range of different points of view from different kinds of women, old and young, mild and wild, traditional or modern; geisha, bar hostesses, housewives, even female writers, all of them want to find their place in the world. The society and the culture of the post war years were tough and bleak, the price those women had to pay was very high; but we admire them, and after watching the film, we feel that we understand more the value of life.

With Moon in Aries in his chart, Naruse’s female archetype was pure struggle for life; one of his main actress, wonderful Hideko Takamine (March 27, 1924, Hokkaido) was an Aries, and in Ukigumo (1954), considered for many his masterpiece, the character she plays is a real female warrior, fighting not only for economic survival, but for the recognition of the man she loves, a melancholic and apparently cold Saturnian man (Masayuki Mori, the actor, was a Capricorn).

Naruse, himself, had a hard life, he was and orphan and it took him long time to be accepted by his bosses (Shochiku and then Toho productions); he had Saturn in opposition to the Sun in Leo, which shows a creative but melancholic and insecure man; with his Venus conjunct to Neptune in Cancer, he had a natural empathy and compassion towards women, but we cannot define him as a feminist; underneath the stream of female vitality, the sadness of the masculine energy flows very dark.

My image of Naruse’s cinema is a sort of sphere where all aspects of everyday life are connected, his sequences are perfect; space and time flow within that sphere, but the axis is broken, and that axis represents man. You can see that in all of his masterpieces, there is a veil separating the sexes, men and women cannot cross the threshold; only in very special and subtle moments that veil is torn. At those moments a man can see the female heart through his own heart, but this experience is very tough for men.

In Onna ga kaidan agaru toki (1960), the manager of a bar in Ginza, (Tatsuya Nakadai) worships the Mama san (Hideko Takamine), but he can only love her chastely as an ideal woman; when she falls for a man (Masayuki Mori), Nakadai, though he understand her reasons, he abandons her because he cannot deal with the real woman. And in the final scene in the train station, when her lover (Mori) abandons her, he understands at that moment how exceptional she is, but he dares not looking into her eyes. Men and women rarely make eye contact in Naruse’s films.

In spite of the pain about existence that runs through his cinema, his movies are easy to watch because they are smooth, perfect; he never plays with his audience emotions, there are not bad people in his stories, only humans.

I love and admire all his films, but I have a particular attraction to Yama no oto (1953); it was adapted from Kawabata’s novel, my favourite Japanese writer; normally, I avoid watching films adapted from novels I admire, but this is the best film adaptation I have ever seen. Yasunari Kawabata was a Gemini, and Naruse had Jupiter in Gemini which stands for a deep understanding of the poetry and the vision of the novel; the exquisite Setsuko Hara was also a Gemini.

Naruse chose to end Yama no oto in a park (Shinjuku Goen); there, Kikuko’s (Setsuko Hara) father in law (So Yamamura) understands her unbearable grief because his own son has neglected her and treated her very badly. This scene is shot with subtle movements of the camera that capture the eyes and facial expressions of both of them, the language of the eyes and the 360 degrees of space around them; in the dialogue, the silences, what is not said, become more important that what is said. Then, the father in law tells her daughter in law that she is free; he empowers the young woman thus rising himself above his role as a patriarch. It is a scene of pure compassion (Yamamura was a Pisces), so subtle that it moves me to tears every time I watch it.(the end)
