FIRST STEP ON THE MOON(1)

Astronaut Neil Armstrong will remain in the history of mankind as the First Man on the Moon; his recent death, 25 August, both closes and opens a whole cycle of scientific progress, faith and heroism of the human species. It was mainly the achievement of a specific country, the USA, and a cluster of its scientists and trained astronauts; but after the mission of the Apollo 11 was completed, something had happened in the minds and the hearts of the people in the entire world; for the first time, man had walked on a different planet, the satellite that had accompanied and illuminated mankind through darkness, the Great Mother and ruler of the rhythms of nature.

The charts of the three members of the first mission to land on the Moon, associated with the event chart, Jul/20th/1969 at 21:56 hrs in Houston, Texas, provides an astonishing map of synchronicity, a laboratory to study the nature of the collective unconscious and the wisdom of symbols. So let us combine historical facts with the language of astrology.

at the moment,
the first step on the moon

According to the oldest and most important traditions in astrology, the Moon is the ruler of Cancer; assuredly, there must have been very objective reasons to launch the Apollo in July 1969, astronomical calculations, summer weather, politics and even some contingencies, but the fact was that the date for the first step of man on the Moon occurred precisely under the sign on Cancer! Scientists use July/21/1969 at 2:56 (UTC which corresponds to Greenwich Mean Time, London); this date corresponds to July/20/1969 at 21:56 hrs in Houston Texas where the Astronaut Mission Control is.

Thus, the event chart has the Sun conjunct Mercury in Cancer, the conquest of the Moon required the intelligence and skill of Mercury; the conjunction is on the cusp of the VI House, an area of work, method and strategies. Besides the Sun in Cancer with the Moon and Mercury, the rest of the planets, signs and houses in this chart organize all the themes of the Space Era; Uranus is associated to the cycles of important scientific and technological discoveries; Jupiter, to long distant trips, explorations and meaningful breakthroughs; Mars, to challenges, courage and competition (there was a constant race between the USA and the URSS for reaching the Moon); and, Saturn, of course, as the planet which makes things happen through serious hard work, organization, strategy and responsibility. So the astrological signs associated to those planets are also very substantial; Aquarius, Sagittarius, Aries and Capricorn.

The Ascendant of the event chart is Aquarius (28th degree), the profile and general outline of the trip to the Moon has this Uranus quality; Mars is the highest planet in this chart, the very symbol of the contest, and it is in Sagittarius (the expansive sign of Jupiter); most fascinating of all, is the exact conjunction of Uranus and Jupiter at zero the degree of Libra. This conjunction might be the key of the whole mission and of this big step for humanity. The connection of Uranus and Jupiter harness vision with expansion, higher intellect with significance, science with guidance. The message is complete with Libra, the sign of harmony and beauty. We can affirm that the conjunction in the chart of the First Step on the Moon, is heralding fraternity for mankind; and yes, there is beauty in the whole project, the working team, the sophisticated technologies, the landing on the Moon.

This symbol of intellectual and emotional connection is enhanced by the Moon at the 11th degree of Libra. Saturn is traditionally exalted (highest possibility of expression) in Libra; the wisdom of the stars is shown by the position of Saturn in Taurus, both Libra (air) and Taurus (earth) are ruled by Venus, but the Saturn had to be in an earthy sign to make things happen at a concrete level of reality. One of the secret names of Alchemy was The Art of the Balance; in astrological terms this was traduced by Saturn in Libra or Saturn and Venus (Mysterium Conjuntionis, in Latin). Personally, I was surprised to find this Venus quality in this event chart as well as in all the other charts associated with the First Step on the Moon, but there seems to be an alchemycal message from the collective psyche in this chart.
