HONG KONG, CITY OF THE XXI CENTURY?

Contemporary society, outlined by the urban and technological developments of the XX century approaching the dawn of the Age of Aquarius, became associated to big modern cities such as New York or Los Angeles; this XXI century will increase such tendency, cities like Hong Kong will become emblematic for the image of this new era. Paris, for example, was an emblem of the XIX century.

Most certainly, a city like Tokyo is already and will keep as a symbol of new technological and artistic innovation of this epoch; but it is a city completely faithful to modernity and progress, there is indeed very little strife in Tokyo against progress in the modern sense of the world.

A city like Hong Kong expresses more and more the contradiction between the dark and luminous aspects of this century, of Pluto and Saturn as shown in the chart of this year. l had had this intuition since the first time l visited Hong Kong, but these last months have been crucial to my understanding of this City State as a micro cosmos, or even as a laboratory, of what the profile of the XXI will be.

Significant friends from different parts of the world came to visit me in HK, l had to be a sort of tourist guide for them; among them, a French friend with his Thai wife, another is a Spanish man of 78 years old, a client of mine who has become, throughout years of counseling, a good friend. Their presence helped me to see and feel HK from inside and outside perspectives; with the French friend l have always shared my intellectual and critical background; through the reactions of his wife l could feel the impact of HK on someone coming from a very traditional society as Thailand; the Spanish friend, a Taurus, was completely fascinated about the food and things one can enjoy and purchase in Hong Kong.

My perception is that HK is like the edge of a knife, a thin line between autonomy against or submission to the huge power of China; the crisis of identity, already present during the English rule, is now more radical; rebellion against authority is now impregnated by a fear of total annihilation (Saturn and Pluto in the New Year Chart). There is, of course, a duality in both opposite tendencies; the fear of China’s antidemocratic logic (radical censorship) is balanced by a need of protection and power that the new giant represents (Pluto, Sun in Capricorn, Saturn in Libra); on the other hand, the need of autonomy and self expression is counterbalanced by the need to be proudly identified with the ancestral motherland (Moon is cancer, Mars in Leo, Jupiter in the V).

Not only does Hong Kong present a tension between modernity and tradition, but the extreme technological development is charged with a feeling of acute anxiety about its future and even about its own survival as a political entity. Like the New Decade Adolescent we described above, Hong Kong is torn apart between its fear of been destroyed by authority (or the mother image), and its fear of being abandoned by her.
